Abstract : The measurement of the unsteady nonuniform flow rate of environmental waters in open channels presents conditions making conventional instruments inappropriate. Our development and demonstration of Teflon-coated hot film sensors, to measure water velocity opens the possibility of applying this rapid response technique to unsteady flow conditions. In conjunction with a rudimentary traversing apparatus, a hot film sensor has been used to determine the volumetric flow rate of tap water in a laminar flow, open-channel, circular-section conduit having highly nonumiform velocity profiles. This preliminary test was in support of an application study directed toward the Environmental Protection Agency program for storm and combined sewer flow control. (Author)
