Abstract : Results of an experimental investigation of rotor stability in short aerostatic bearings with large radial clearances are reported. The main characteristics required for the calculation of gas bearings of this type are given. It is noted that by increasing the radial clearance up to 20-30 mu and decreasing the L/D ratio to 0.5 the level of rotor stability can be increased, regardless of the decrease in the gas layer rigidity.
