Abstract : Experimental investigation is reported of the complex aerodynamic structure of the swirling flow in short cylindrical combustion chambers. It is found that swirl decreases along the chamber length, leading to a thickening of the flow and an increase in the tangential velocity component and static pressure. The positive pressure gradient, thus created, leads to the formation of an annular counterflow. The momentum loss is most pronounced in the inlet portion of the chamber from thereon, the momentum decreases almost linearly. A dimensionless formula describing the behavior of the momentum is proposed. (Author)
