Abstract : Mechanisms by which materials are destroyed under the action of droplet impacts are discussed, with particular reference to the blades of wet steam turbines. Fatigue limits and threshold speeds are determined experimentally and the effect of droplet size examined. An explanation is given of the change of structure following erosion. Calculations predict that the effect of the retention of water by the resulting surface texture is to reduce erosion rates. The resistance of materials to erosion is evaluated from relevant parameters such as the number of load cycles and the energy capacity of the material before fracture. (Author)
