Abstract : The report discusses the characteristics of a group of variable giant stars of the Mira Ceti type having periods from 80 to 1000 days and characteristic emission spectra similar to those of the later spectral classes ME, CE and SE. Special attention is given to U, B and V photometry and IR electrophotometry of these stars. Studies of IR stars of this group are reviewed. Other topics include the visible spectral region and the spectral effects of shock waves and light absorption in the atmospheres of these stars. Their mean absolute magnitudes and their distribution in space are calculated and their kinematic characteristics are analyzed. The difficulties encountered when attempting to explain the mechanism of variability of these stars are noted. (Author)
