Abstract : Previous authors have concluded that 'specimens of unknown chloritic minerals can be classified by means of infrared spectra alone. When the values of Y (degree of substitution of silicon by aluminum) exceed 1.2 there is a possibility of structure modification.' Attention is now being focused more sharply on the changes occurring in the main band of the Si-O bond in the 1000/cm region. The authors discuss their results which arrive at the conclusion that infrared spectra can be used to classify these specimens into various groups.
