Abstract : Removal of aircraft paint is accomplished by highly aggressive paint removers. Studies were made to determine whether hydrogen is generated during stripping which might lead to embrittlement of the steel substrate. Experimental data from acid dissolution of iron indicate that the electrochemical permeation method is suitable for the determination of hydrogen generated by chemical attack. Permeation data are presented for the hydrogen generated by reaction of dilute sulfuric acid with Armco iron, and the action of paint removers on cadmium coatings. Time to failure data for cadmium plated stressed notched C-rings exposed to paint remover are given. Suggestions for the controlling mechanisms for hydrogen permeating through cadmium are made.
