Abstract : The vibrational relaxation of HF has been studied in the presence of H2 behind incident shock waves in the temperature range 1350 to 4000K by monitoring the 2.7 micrometer infrared emission. Under the conditions of these experiments, the HF-H2 system cannot be readily treated analytically. Therefore, the experimental profiles of the concentration of the relaxing species are matched with computer-calculated profiles. Reasonable matches between experimental and computer profiles are obtained when the efficiency of H2 as a collision partner is taken to be 0.3 to 0.5 times that of HF itself. However, this result should be considered an upper limit. The actual value may be smaller since the calculated profiles are relatively insensitive to the efficiency of H2 if it is very small.
