Abstract : The report describes the results of the second phase of a program designed to develop materials and techniques for map storage and display using volume holography. In this phase work is concentrated on characterization and evaluation of the newly of the newly developed electro-optic storage materials and on techniques for recording, accessing, and color encoding the holograms. The resolution and angular selectivity of the crystals were found to be adequate and very close to theoretical predictions. A major improvement was made in the diffraction efficiency of multiply recorded holograms through the use of electric field-enhancement techniques. Good-quality optically encoded color holograms were successfully recorded and displayed using iron-doped lithium niobate. Electronic color encoding was investigated and implemented successfully.
