Abstract : The search for new and improved products and techniques for high-density optical storage continues to reveal novel processes. The alkali halides have been of interest for some time, but the discovery at the Naval Research Laboratory of the unique photodichroic property of certain crystals that permits storage by reorientation of the M sub F centers with polarized light opens a new field for investigation. Sodium fluoride (NaF) crystals have been evaluated for holographic recording and recovery at room temperatures and the pertinent characteristics for high-density data storage established. The resolution capabilities, characteristic sensitivity curve, and Brass suppression were determined and will have influence on the ultimate application of this material. (Author)
