Abstract : The elastic stress analyses of a bi-material plate with a crack approaching normally to the bi-material interfaces and with crack tips at the interfaces are studied in this investigation. The finite element method was used to analyze the problems. Strain energy release rate, was calculated by a potential energy method for the crack approaching normally to the interfaces. Finite element procedures and computer programs for the bi- material plate under plane stress condition were developed during the course of this investigation. The strength of stress singularity, the stress distribution (straight ahead of the crack and along the interface) are also discussed. The strain energy release rate coefficient, of an aluminum-epoxy system was found by an experimental compliance calibration procedure. A boundary collocation procedure applied to the Zak and Williams stress function was employed to determine the elastic stress function in the vicinity of the crack tip of a bi-material plate with a crack normal to the interfaces and crack tips at the interfaces.
