Abstract : The study is an analysis to examine the validity of a small perturbation approximation technique for determining the aerodynamic forces of a slender body of noncircular cross-section. The approach used was to apply the technique to a problem that could also be solved exactly. The problem chosen was a corrugated cylinder of infinite length and elliptic cross-section in an irrotational ideal air stream. The governing equation and boundary conditions for a corrugated elliptic cylinder are transferred to elliptic coordinates and solved exactly by separating the variables. Comments are given on improving the accuracy and extending the range of the approximation used, and recommendations are made for further study. (Author)
