Abstract : The aim of this research is the determination of the structure and variation of the topside ionosphere at mid-latitudes during the sunrise period, based on electron-density measurements obtained with the aid of Alouette I, the Canadian topside-sounder satellite. Electron-density profiles obtained from Alouette I soundings recorded at various North American stations provide the basis for the determination of the scale-height of the electron-density distribution profiles. The scale-heights profiles, with proper physical assumptions, are interpreted in terms of the combined ion and electron temperatures and the relative ion concentration in the altitude range of 450 to 750 km.
