Abstract : Measurements are reported on the dispersion characteristics of plasma instabilities in a carbon monoxide plasma. Using correlation methods, it was determined that the instabilities are cathode to anode directed forward waves, with little dispersion but broad bandwidth. It is suggested that the entrainment of the noise by an external source, at as high a frequency as possible, can be useful to reduce the influence of discharge fluctuations on the CO laser output.
