Abstract : The study examined support problems of the weapon system manager which result from the availability of new, improved electronic items, such as resistors, capacitors and semiconductors. The study focused primarily on the Item Reduction Study portion of the DoD Standardization Program as it relates to the Fleet Ballistic Missile System. Two approaches to the analysis of a proposed new standard item to replace currently used items of hardware were identified: the commodity approach, which compares the characteristics of the proposed new standard item with currently used items and the weapons systems approach, which compares item characteristics and also considers where the item is used.
