Abstract : An experimental technique is presented whereby surface and subsurface strains are retrieved from elastomer specimens (4 in. x 4 in. x 6 in.) being subjected to triaxial stress conditions. Descriptions of the specimens, load fixture, elastomer strain gages and instrumentation readout equipment are given. A unique feature of the system is the utilization of elastomer strain gages which can be embedded in or surface-mounted on the test specimen. These resistance type gages have a useful strain range in excess of 50 percent, and, due to their elastomeric body construction, they induce a minimal strain field distortion in the specimen. In the experiment, the elastomer gages are monitored remotely and the data recorded on an oscillograph. (Author)
