Abstract : The paper presents the results of an analytical and experimental investigation of a one-dimensional, continuous-electrode, shock-tube driven MHD accelerator. The unsteady flow behind an ionizing shock wave in argon subjected to transverse electric and magnetic fields is analyzed using the method of characteristics. The magnetic Reynolds number is assumed much less than unity, the gas is assumed to be in local thermodynamic equilibrium, and Hall effects are included. The results for a typical calculation are presented. (Author)
