Abstract : The behavior of homogeneous materials subjected to repeated impingements of liquid droplets is investigated. Based on fatigue theorems, a model is presented for describing both the incubation period ni(i.e. the time elapsed before the mass loss of the material becomes appreciable), and the mass loss past the incubation period m. The parameters are established which govern the length of the incubation period and the subsequent mass loss rate, and simple algebraic expressions are developed relating ni and m to the properties of the impinging droplets and the material. The limits of applicability of the model are also established. (Author)
