Abstract : The experimental determination of the melting characteristics of solid hydrogen has been accomplished. This required the measurements of appropriate thermodynamic parameters, thermophysical properties and fluid flow rates required to characterize the melting of solid hydrogen in terms of an overall heat transfer coefficient, operating conditions and initial solid geometry. Correlations for both melting characteristics and thermophysical properties (K, alpha) are given. It was found that favorable thermophysical properties of solid hydrogen contributed to a relatively fast melting rate. A comparison of the thermal conductivity obtained from the experimental solid with reported measurements for crystals reveals a significant reduction attributed to mechanical imperfections.
