Abstract : Zinc-air batteries are subject to a marked decrease in performance at low temperature operation. Therefore, a detailed study of the pertinent parameters influencing air cathode behavior at reduced temperatures has been initiated. A series of electrode materials of different composition and physical characteristics has been used for the study. The electrochemical investigation included temperature studies of the charge transfer process occurring in the activation-controlled region of the O(2-) in the diffusion region. Real surface area determinations were made by two different methods: H2-deposition and BET measurements. The results obtained show that the major effect of temperature reduction is a decrease in transport-controlled currents.
