Abstract : The paper shows that it is possible, in principle, to fix nitric oxide in the accelerating nozzle of an MHD generator. The authors calculate the flow of relaxation combustion products in the nozzle. It is assumed that equilibrium excitation of translational, rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom takes place before the nozzle is reached. Viscosity, heat conductivity and diffusion are not taken into account. A complete system of gas dynamic and chemical kinetic equations is solved in a digital computer. The authors show that, where there is an actual discharge of combustion products, a cooling rate of 10 to the power of 8 deg C/s is attained in a nozzle 1.5 m in length and that the nitric oxide formed within the combustion chamber is completely fixed; with a nozzle length of 7.5 m, 95% of the nitric oxide becomes fixed.
