Abstract : The criteria for the selection of alkali halides as high power 10.6 micrometer laser window materials are discussed. Experiments for improving the mechanical properties of these materials, such as hardening, hot forging and alloying are described. Also a discussion of the damage mechanism in KCl is given. (Author)
