Abstract : In selecting optimal conditions for irradiating malignant tumors, it is first necessary to investigate the dose distribution for various conditions of irradiation. This is an extremely complicated task, and for its solution we use a BESM-2 computer with linear programming. The fundamental conditions of dose distribution in the organism are formulated first, and a mathematical interpretation of the problem is given in terms of linear programming. To calculate the dosage distribution with the computer, special programs were set up which allow for the heterogeneity of the medium according to Dutreix et al. The programs can be used to estimate the distribution of doses from different radiation sources in a homogeneous medium. A solution of the problem involving the selection of optimal irradiation conditions for a cancer of the esophagus, localized at the level of the eighth thoracic vertebra, is offered and compared with the four-field method of irradiation.
