Abstract : The document contains the objective, concepts, and results of the Compatible Module Concepts Study. Concepts for designing compatible, modular Data Management Systems (DMS) and the development of a structural framework for interfacing modules and tailoring these systems to specific environments, while ensuring overall compatibility within the data handling community, are addressed. A conceptual generalized DMS, facilitating all envisioned requirements for DMSs in the 1970s, is presented and serves as a vehicle for functionally partitioning modules and developing this structural framework which emphasizes a design from the top-down approach for future systems. A preliminary operational/functional specification for the resultant conceptual DMS structural architecture is defined in some detail, by identifying the functional components (modules) allocated to each functional area of the DMS and by identifying the major interfacing parameters and defining the communications/interrelationship between functional areas.
