Abstract : Using the theory of electromagnetic wave propagation in optically birefringent and magnetically ordered materials, a simple experimental method for the measurement of the intrinsic Faraday rotation in such materials is presented. A study of the Faraday rotation in ErFeO3 as a function of temperature from ambient down to spin reorientation region (90-100K) at a wavelength of 6070A is carried out. The intrinsic Faraday rotation at ambient is found to be 7600 deg/cm. It increases gradually with decreasing temperature and drops to zero in the spin reorientation region. (Author)
