Abstract : Schwinger's variational principle in its fractional form was applied to the study of vibrational excitations in collinear atomharmonic oscillator collisions. Trial wave functions used were those of distorted waves derived from distortion potentials based on a free molecule approximation, an internal average, and an optical potential recently proposed by Roberts. It was found that for nearest neighbor transitions in most of the systems studied, a simple variational treatment yielded transition probabilities superior to those of a perturbation expansion such as the distorted-wave Born series.
