Abstract : The long-term thermal emf drifts are related to the depletion of reactive solutes by oxidation, and the short-term changes to short-range ordering. It is shown that the environmental stability of nickel-base thermocouple alloys can be significantly enhanced by increasing solute levels above those required to cause a transition from internal to external modes of oxidation, and/or by selecting solutes which preferentially oxidize to form impervious diffusion barrier films.
