Abstract : A modification of the Hunt-Hinds tabular method of internal ballistics is presented, suitable for solution by digital computer. This modified solution is applied to the analysis of an experimental smooth-bore 40 mm gun system, used in experiments on ultra-high-speed metal cutting, for which a modified conventional gun proves economically advantageous. Alternative design modifications are investigated and optimum firing conditions determined. It is shown that, for minor modifications to the gun barrel, projectile speeds up to 8000 ft/sec may be obtained at projectile weights of 0.2 lb, without exceeding safe barrel pressures. (Author)
