Abstract : Automated, inexpensive, mass screening technics for the detection of hemoglobin S in both military and civilian populations have been proven by extensive field tests. These automated mass screening technics permit, for the first time in the history of sickle cell disease, the development of accurate, compiled statistical data, including gene frequency, incidence, morbidity, and mortality. The use of automated, inexpensive, objective, molecular-based mass screening technics is an essential prior condition for the elimination of this genetic disease by appropriate genetic counseling.
