Abstract : The concept of high resistivity semiconductor waveguides offers the following: Low transmission loss for radiation over large regions of the spectrum; Low cost, since guides can be machined and polished from the outside rather than from the inside, and have flexibility in construction; Design of devices in the propagating medium; and, because transmission is in a relatively high dielectric, the energy is transmitted in an oversized guide mode, and broader bandwidths are possible.
