Abstract : Fuel cell researchers have long been interested in the mechanism and catalysis of hydrocarbon oxidation. An unequivocal determination of these processes could provide the insight necessary for the selection and preparation of more efficient and less expensive electrocatalysts; currently a major obstacle to the practical use of direct hydrocarbon oxidation as the anodic reaction in a fuel cell. One approach, described in the report, combines electrochemical techniques with gas phase chromatography to study the electrosorbed intermediates present on a fuel cell electrode during the oxidative process.
