Abstract : The report covers the work which has been done on applications of modern control theory to the design of actual systems. Procedures have been developed that permit control system designers familiar with frequency domain techniques to understand and apply modern forms of control compensation and to indicate how the more modern theory can be used to improve system performance. Specific applications that have been looked at are the design of large scale power plants and aircraft control. Closely related to applications is also the work done on the development of numerical methods for synthesis and numerical solutions of the partial differentials that arise in stochastic control, monte carlo optimization, a computer program for parameter adaptive control when there is a time lag, digital compensation, iterative methods improving performance and for small noise stochastic control. New results have been obtained that should provide new methods for achieving guaranteed cost control and/or asymptotic stability where there are unknown time-varying parameters. (Author)
