Abstract : A method is presented which reduced the number of thresholds required by a multi-threshold threshold element to realize a function of a nonbinary variable, as would arise in certain nonparametric pattern-recognition techniques. Polynomials (often of only first- or second-degree) replace selected thresholds, and predetermined bounds enable the designer to determine in advance the value of the trade. Illustrative examples are presented and discussed. (Author)
