Abstract : ATES, SILVER, WAVEGUIDESLITHIUM NIOBATES, *ACOUSTIC WAVES, *SURFACE WAVES, ACOUSTIC DELAY LINES, BISMUTH GERMANIUM OXIDE, SIGNAL PROCESSING, SURFACE WAVESWaveguiding has been observed at 50 MHz in a thin silver strip of 15 mil width vacuum deposited on a bismuth germanium oxide substrate and operating as an electric-field shorting guide. Waveguiding is demonstrated by the elimination of diffraction loss. Waveguiding was also demonstrated in an indium antimonide thin film surface wave amplifier, using a film width of 1 mil operating as an electric-field shorting guide at 340 MHz. This amplifier is suitable for use together with metal film guides of the above type. Wrap-around metal film guides will be constructed to measure propagation loss in these guides, for experimental evaluation of the prospects for using the amplifiers for compensating propagation loss in waveguide systems for very long time delay. A 20 microsecond balanced phase delay line was demonstrated in which the 6 dB bi-directional insertion loss of ordinary two-port delay lines was eliminated. (Author)
