Abstract : One of the most frequently occurring problems in the physical sciences is that of developing a mathematical model which relates the response to the independent variables of the system under study. One objective of a model may be the estimation of the response with the best possible precision throughout a given region of variation of the variables. Another may be to estimate one or more of the coefficients in the model with the best possible precision. The selection of the best design to meet these and other possible objectives was discussed by Kiefer and others. In the paper some problems associated with the development of mathematical models for the prediction of the performance of digital circuits are considered. (Author)
