Abstract : A transparent ethylene terpolymer (ETA 138200) adhesive was optimized and engineering data were established to describe its utility in polycarbonate composite aircraft transparencies. The hydroxyl content was adjusted to provide for the best balance of toughness and adhesion versus elongation. Improvements in toughness were also derived through increases in molecular weight of the ethylene terpolymer by the use of heretofore unavailable materials and processes. It was shown that a higher level of hydroxyl (3.4%) in the terpolymer would be desirable. Primarily, by the use of partial crosslinking, the form- stable temperature (zero tensile strength) WAS INCREASED TO 178 DEGREES F. The excellent mechanical performance of material designated ETA 138200 was obtained over the spectrum of temperature from -65 degrees F TO +165 degrees F. The thermal utility range of the ETA 138200 in laminates varied, with mismatch in thermal coefficient of expansion of the laminate plies. The high temperature utility of the adhesive in glass- polycarbonate laminates was increased to 180 degrees F. Sheets measuring 2 feet in width were extruded in a thickness of 30 mils and cut to lengths of 3 feet. (Author, modified-PL)
