Abstract : Comparative studies were conducted on the process of turning the SCh21 40 gray cast iron billets over the casting scale and without it, by cutting tools with mechanically fastened VK8 hard alloy inserts. The cutting temperature was measured by the method of natural thermocouple. It was established that the rate of cutting tool wear with respect to time is substantially higher in machining over the scale; the cutting temperature in machining over the scale is higher, while the tool durability (T) is lower.
