Abstract : The authors show that hydrogen peroxide can be generated from water without the use of light or free oxygen. All that is needed is a compound having the correct oxidation reduction potential. Iodine is used to show that in fact hydrogen peroxide can be produced: H2O + I2 = HI + HIO followed by HIO + H2O + HI + H2O2.
