Abstract : The results of a study of the effect of diamond polishing on contact resistance are given. It is shown that a decrease in the gradient of residual stresses and microhardness over the depth and a lower value of tensile stresses in the subsurface layers can increase the durability of roller bearings. It was established that with diamond smoothing of SHKH 15 tempered steel in the surface layer, there arise compression stresses of a magnitude 50-120 kg/sq mm with a small gradient. The total depth of the propatation of the compression stresses depends on the radial force. (Author)
