Abstract : The Rowe red blood cell freezing system has been set up in a blood bank and biochemically and operationally analyzed. The system was found to work well, provided the red cells are stored in metal cans, and the teflon freezing bags are avoided when the manual washing technique is used. The red cellmembrane, metabolism and hemoglobin function appear to be well maintained during frozen storage. The desirability of a multisystem frozen red cell storage program in modern blood banking is discussed. (Author)
