Abstract : Albino rats were exposed to a 160 torr O2, 68 torr CO2 gaseous environment at a total pressure of 380 torr and tested for the response to sodium pentobarbital anesthesia. Measurements of the time to ataxia, supine recumbency, and surgical plane (lack of pedal reflex), and total sleep times were made. There was no significant difference in times to ataxia, supine recumbency, and surgical plane between the hypercapnic rats and controls although the mean time was greater for the hypercapnic rats in each measurement. Hypercapnic rats had increased total sleep times as compared to control animals. (Author)
