Abstract : Based on earlier research work in the measurement of jet and rocket propellants by means of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), a propellant mass flow meter based on the NMR principle was designed and constructed. The mass flow measurement is derived by multiplying flow velocity determined by means of NMR, by fluid density determined using a vibrating beam densitometer. The NMR velocimeter measures the velocity of the propellant without moving parts or direct contact with the liquid. Attempts to reduce the size and weight of the velocimeter for airborne applications were unsuccessful, primarily because of the required size and weight for the magnetizing and detection fields. While practical for ground installations, the resulting size and weight of the primary element made it unsuited to airborne applications. (Author)
