Abstract : An apparatus was designed and constructed to measure the modulation transfer function of the atmospheric medium as a function of wavelength of light. The modulation transfer function (MTF) in this case was considered to be the ratio of the modulation of an optical target at a fixed range to the modulation at a range short enough so that atmospheric attenuation was negligible. Modulation measurements were made using a telescope which focused the image of the target on a slit. The image was mechanically scanned across the slit by a rotating mirror, and the intensity at the slit was measured by a photodetector. The preliminary results indicated a linear decrease in modulation of 0.1 per 1000A. (Author)
