Abstract : In the planning of experiments, saturated first-order plans play a large role, that is, linear plans containing the minimum possible number of points. They find application in the linear approximation of the response and are used in factorial planning; second-order plans suitable for describing the almost stationary region can be built on the basis of these plans. Saturated first-order plans yield coordinates of the vertices of a simplex that is a basic geometrical figure used in the simplicial method of the adaptive optimization of processes, and so on. The article attempts to outline briefly the principal advances in the theory of first-order saturated plans. In particular, a systematic examination is made of the properties of saturated plans, as well as of problems associated with using plans in extrenal experimentation. (Author)
