Abstract : Project DANNY BOY was an excavation project for the PLOWSHARE Program and consisted of the detonation of a low-yield nuclear device in the basalt mesa in Area 18 at the Nevada Test Site of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commision. The primary purpose in the tests was to give data on: amount, distribution, and decay of radioactivity released by a nuclear cratering detonation buried near optimum depth-of-burst in a hard medium, cratering capability of nuclear explosions in a hard, dry, noncarbonate medium such as basalt, and character of seismic shock and air-blast from a nuclear detonation near optimum depth-of-burst in basalt. The tests presented in the report were conducted to both furnish information as to the physical properties of the in-place material for use in designing special grout mixtures to be used in the embedment of various types of instruments in the site area and also to furnish information as to the characteristics of the in-place material prior to shot time.
