Abstract : Polyamides were prepared by the interfacial condensation procedure using an optically active diacid chloride with the appropriate diamine and by aminolysis of 2,4-dinitrophenyl or succinimido diesters of the optically active acid with the required diamine. Polyamides prepared by both methods had the same characteristic trends in optical properties with only relatively minor optical differences in rotatory strength. Optical studies yielded evidence for splitting of the amide pi-pi* transition generated by coupling of the amide chromophores held in a fixed arrangement within the polymer chain. Enhancement was observed with the rigid piperidine and trans-2,5-dimethylpiperazine polymers. (Author)
