Abstract : Leg 15 of Scripps Institution of Oceanography ANTIPODE Expedition (R/V Melville) was a Geosecs (Geochemical Ocean Sections Program) intercalibration and equipment - testing leg which included, as a scientific objective, a study of the deep and bottom water in the area of the Tonga Trench between Samoa and Tonga. In addition to detailed hydrographic casts, the Geosecs STD developed by Neil Brown at Woods Hole was used for the first time to obtain continuous temperature and salinity profiles to depths of 4800 meters at 16 stations in three sections across the trench.
