Abstract : CONTRACTING (pinching) due to self-electromagnetic forces. Laser lines have been found between the ultraviolet and orange portion of the spectrum, all belonging to triply ionized ionic species. Peak powers exceeding 500 watts have been detected on several of these lines. Their time of occurrence, wavelength, duration, power and coherence length have been measured. Optimum pressures and currents have been found and compared with other published results. In addition, using a simplified model of a pinching plasma column, streak camera pictures of the contracting column, and interferometric measurements of the time varying electron density, one can estimate electron temperatures. Values of the electron temperature and density as well as the conductivity are compared with other published results. (Author)
