Abstract : The report gives an account of results of methods for the determination of heights, by which gravimetric measurements in Antarctica are chiefly determined. The errors in the determination of heights by the barometric method can reach a considerable value (plus or minus 30 m). A high accuracy of determination of heights can be provided by trigonometric leveling (plus or minus 3 m). The results are given of a special investigation of the refraction coefficient, whose value varies from +0.1 during the day to +3.5 or more at night. Also the methods of gravimetric measurements on extensive itineraries are summarized. Some results are explained of the interpretation of gravimetric observations, carried out on the Second and Sixth Soviet Antarctic Expeditions. A classification is given of the physical-geographic characteristics determining the conditions under which the astrogeodetic and gravimetric measurements were conducted. (Author)
