Abstract : Rate gyros are used in flight systems as sensors for angular velocities. For a rate gyro installed in a flying body, the complete equation of motion is derived and from it the simplified equation of motion. Only further assumptions which in the individual case, have to be checked with respect to their admissibility lead to a linear differential equation with constant coefficients, the structure of which corresponds to the equation of motion of rate gyro mostly mentioned in literature. The statements also contain the set up for the calculation of the torques acting on the bearings which are of particular importance in the case of long-term missions for considering constructive interests and for the method of installation of the gyro.
